ABEGAZ Surafel Berhanu
Ph.D Student
ABEGAZ Surafel Berhanu graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic from the University of Botswana in 2017 with a specialization in Telecommunications. He subsequently joined Addis Ababa University in 2018 within the Master of Communication Engineering program in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His thesis dissertation was on Design and Performance Analysis on Schottky Terahertz Transceivers for 6G Wireless with a focus on Graphene FET application.
On graduating in 2020 he began a career as an Associate Researcher within the Communication Satellite Project Office at the former Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI). During his stay at ESSTI he was a member of the 3U CubeSat project and responsible for the communication sub-systems in particular the Telemetry, Tracking and Monitoring. He further participated in the two month UNNATI program on nano-satellite assembly, integration and testing at the UR Rao Satellite Center, ISRO , Bangalore, India. At ESSTI he has also served as the avionics coordinator for the Hybrid Rocket project.
Currently, he is a PhD Student in Communication Engineering at Addis Ababa University and student member of ELEDIA Research Group at AAiT with research interests in 6G antenna design, computational electromagnetics and microwave devices and circuits. In 2021, he received the Blažo Mirčevski best paper award by a young first author for his conference proceeding titled ‘120 GHz Schottky Terahertz Transceivers with Graphene FET Sub-harmonic Mixers’. He also holds an Internet-of-Things patent.
