%X This paper focuses on designing modular, passive, and static artificial metasurfaces to serve as electromagnetic skins (EMSs) on buildings, aimed at enhancing coverage in urban millimeter-wave communication scenarios. A specialized design strategy is introduced to find optimal trade-off solutions that ensure sufficient coverage in areas with weak base station signals. The optimal EMS layout is achieved through a binary multi-objective optimization method. Representative numerical results are provided and discussed to showcase the features and potential of the EMS solution in a smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach. %D 2024 %A Paolo ROCCA %A Pietro DA RĂ¹ %A Nicola ANSELMI %A Marco SALUCCI %A Giacomo OLIVERI %A Andrea MASSA %I ELEDIA Research Center - University of Trento %K Artificial materials, millimeter wave, mobile communications, multiobjective optimization, smart electromagnetic (EM) environment. %T Enhancing Urban Wireless Networks with Modular Reflecting EM Skins %L elediasc12891
