Within this framework, this work presents an innovative technique for the smart lighting of buildings based on the distributed sensing capabilities of a low-cost wireless sensor network (WSN). The acquired information by the WSN nodes is processed by a central unit in order to adaptively control the intensity of lights starting from the real-time measurement of the brightness conditions and energy consumption. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on the particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is exploited in order to minimize a suitable cost function accounting for conflicting user-defined requirements. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is assessed through a set of laboratory-controlled experiments. publisher: University of Trento date: 2017 type: Monograph type: NonPeerReviewed format: text language: en identifier: http://www.eledia.org/students-reports/725/1/An%20Innovative%20Technique%20for%20Smart%20Lighting%20in%20Buildings%20through%20Multi%E2%80%90Objective%20Particle%20Swarm%20Optimization.pdf identifier: Viani, F. and Polo, A. and Garofalo, P. and Anselmi, N. and Salucci, M. and Giarola, E.
