?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eledia.org%2Fstudents-reports%2F504%2F&rft.title=Array+Thinning+Through+Binary+Sequences&rft.creator=Oliveri%2C+Giacomo&rft.creator=Massa%2C+Andrea&rft.subject=TU+Technical+Reports+and+Publications&rft.description=Thinning+is+a+standard+technique+to+reduce+the+power+consumption%2C+hardware+complexity%2C+cost%2C+and+weight+of+large+arrays+%5B1%5D%5B2%5D.+However%2C+array+thinning+does+not+allow+a+suitable+control+of+the+peak+sidelobe+level+(PSL)%2C+as+for+filled+arrays%2C+with+a+reduction+of+the+array+performances+%5B1%5D%5B2%5D.+In+the+literature%2C+several+techniques+have+been+proposed+for+the+design+of+thinned+arrays+with+low+sidelobes+%5B1%5D-%5B4%5D.+In+a+chronological+order%2C+arrays+were+at+first+thinned+by+deterministic+techniques%2C+but+no+significant+advantages+on+the+PSL+reduction+have+been+obtained+over+random+approaches+%5B1%5D.+Successively%2C+stochastic+optimization+techniques+have+been+widely+and+successfully+applied+%5B3%5D%5B4%5D.+However%2C+such+techniques+present+high+computational+costs+when+applied+to+large+arrays%2C+and+they+do+not+allow+a-priori+estimates+of+the+expected+performances+for+a+given+aperture+size+and+thinning+factor+%5B2%5D.+More+recently%2C+thinned+arrays+have+been+synthesized+by+exploiting+the+autocorrelation+properties+of+binary+sequences+derived+from+Difference+Sets+(DSs)+%5B2%5D%5B5%5D.+Such+an+approach+has+several+advantages+over+traditional+thinning+techniques.+It+is+computationally+efficient+and+its+performances+are+predictable+%5B2%5D.+However%2C+DSs+exist+only+for+a+limited+subset+of+configurations%2C+and+their+features+cannot+be+exploited+in+a+general+way+%5B2%5D%5B5%5D.+In+order+to+apply+the+same+strategy+to+a+wider+set+of+array+configurations%2C+sequences+which+are+sub-optimal+with+respect+to+DSs+can+be+considered.+For+instance%2C+Almost+Difference+Sets+(ADSs)+%5B6%5D+are+good+candidates+for+large+array+thinning%2C+since+they+represent+a+generalization+of+DSs+with+several+similar+properties+%5B6%5D.+This+paper+is+aimed+at+analyzing+the+applicability+of+ADSs+to+the+design+of+thinned+linear+arrays%2C+as+well+as+the+effectiveness+of+such+an+array+synthesis+technique+in+terms+of+beam-pattern+features.+Selected+numerical+results+are+provided+to+assess+the+performances+of+the+proposed+approach+also+in+comparison+with+state-of-the-art+thinning+techniques+with+predictable+PSL+behaviour.&rft.date=2011-01&rft.type=Technical+Report&rft.type=NonPeerReviewed&rft.format=text&rft.language=en&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eledia.org%2Fstudents-reports%2F504%2F1%2FDISI-11-194.C173.pdf&rft.identifier=++Oliveri%2C+Giacomo+and+Massa%2C+Andrea++(2011)+Array+Thinning+Through+Binary+Sequences.++%5BTechnical+Report%5D+++++
