Abstract

This work addresses the design of subarrayed phased arrays (PAs) with control over only the amplitude and phase, enabling the generation of custom-shaped power patterns that match with the specified reference pattern. The synthesis problem is approached within the power pattern domain, introducing an innovative clustering method with complex excitations. This method decomposes the reference power pattern into a series of elementary patterns, equal in number to the array elements. A selection of representative results is provided to demonstrate the approach's capabilities and to evaluate its performance with respect to the state-of-the-art (SoA) excitation matching (EM)-based clustering techniques.
